Pre-K & Kindergarten

Set In Motion Your Student’s Education at Troy ISD

Pre-K and Kindergarten Information

Troy ISD offers full-day Prekindergarten for eligible 3- and 4-year-old students. (See eligibility details below.) Did you know that 90% of a child’s brain develops before age 5? At Troy ISD, we believe in starting strong. Our Prekindergarten program gives students the head start they deserve—boosting kindergarten readiness and building long-term academic and social success. Research shows Pre-K students are 3.5 times more likely to be ready for kindergarten. Even though Pre-K children are still very young, they’re capable of more than we often give them credit for. The goal at this stage isn’t perfection—it’s progress. With the right guidance and encouragement, our tiny learners grow into confident, independent problem-solvers, ready to take on the world one small step at a time. Set in motion your student’s education!

Most children should be fully potty traied by the age of 3. However, the district recognizes that there may be some potty accidents and/or a short period of toileting training regression. By the age of 2, children begin to pull up and down their pants, and by the age of 3, they begin to button and zip their pants. THis may be with or without minor assistance from parents or guardians.

Children who have potty accidents without medical diagnoses are expected to properly take care of their bathroom needs with minimal assistance from school staff. Minimal assistance refers to buttoning or zipping pants, handing items such as wipes or cloths, and reminders to wash hands or flush the toilet. School staff will NOT provide personal hygiene tasks such as wiping or changing the child’s clothing. Children must be able to clean themselves independently and unassisted.

Children wo are medically unable to properly potty train will require a medical provider order or are enrolled in a specialized educational program for school staff to diaper or assist in toileting. At this time, health services may initiate an individualized care plan. Responsibile staff will utilize the outlined Diapering procedures.

The Texas Education Agency requires that all children meet specific immunization requirements:

PreK:

  • DPT/DTaP/DT-4 doses
  • Polio-3 doses

FAQ's

  • In-person tours will be available during Meet the Teacher Night in August. In the meantime, we invite you to take a virtual tour of our campus by watching the video.

  • Applications are typically processed within 2–3 business days. Once reviewed, you will receive an email or phone call with your approval status.
If it has been more than a week and you haven’t received a notification, please contact Shannon Gelner in the front office at 254-938-0304.

  • Pre-K:

Students remain with the same teacher and paraprofessional throughout the day, providing a consistent and supportive learning environment.
Each day includes one hour of specials, such as art, music, or library, along with daily physical education (PE) to keep students active. After lunch, students have a scheduled nap time to rest and recharge.
Snack time is also built into the day, and parents are welcome to provide snacks for their child. Class sizes average around 15 students, allowing for more individualized attention and support.

    Kindergarten:

In Kindergarten, students stay busy with a full day of learning, fun, and movement. While they don’t take naps, they do enjoy two recesses—a 20-minute break in the morning and a quick 10-minute reset in the afternoon. Each day includes a 55-minute specials block with PE, plus a rotation of music, library, and character education or art. Although classrooms don’t have a full-time paraprofessional, there is a shared paraprofessional who is available to support Kindergarten. Students also have an afternoon snack—parents are encouraged to send something nutritious (think goldfish, pretzels, or crackers—no candy or gummies, please!). The average class size is around 22 students.

  • 10 Tips to Prepare:

    1. Read, read, read! Make reading together a daily habit.
    2. Build problem-solving skills by encouraging your child to think through everyday challenges.
    3. Promote independence with tasks like dressing themselves and cleaning up.
    4. Practice cutting and gluing to build fine motor skills.
    5. Teach them how to open lunch containers and food wrappers on their own.
    6. Help them recognize their written name when they see it.
    7. Practice writing their name using both uppercase and lowercase letters.
    8. Coach them through peer conflict resolution by talking about feelings and fair solutions.
    9. Work on following multi-step directions, like "Get your shoes and put them by the door."
    10. Remind yourself (and them): they'll be just fine! Pre-K and Kindergarten is a big step, but they’re ready!
