SHAC

The Troy ISD School Health Advisory Council meets a minimum of four times a year for the purpose of discussing and making recommendations to administration related to issues of health and wellness for the faculty and staff of Troy ISD. The Council is guided by Board Policy as well as the Eight Components of Coordinated School Health:

  • Nutrition Services
  • Health Services
  • Healthy and Safe School Environment
  • Counseling and Mental Health Services
  • Staff Wellness Promotion
  • Parent and Community Involvement
  • Physical Education
  • Health Education

 


 

Our Vision
The SHAC Committee works to:

  • Support a healthy and safe school environment that fosters learning.
  • Dedicate efforts to goals that will produce healthier minds and bodies through effective school health education and services.
  • Achieve academic success by providing leadership to those who teach and empower our students.
  • Champion the practice of Coordinated School Health to effectively reach our goals and objectives through the eight components of Coordinated School Health programming.

Goals 

  • Review and approve the selection of a new Coordinated School Health Curriculum and ensure its implementation.
  • Monitor implementation of the district's approved wellness policy.
  • Evaluation of the district's approved wellness policy.
  • Develop and implement goals and objectives for physical education/activity programs after reviewing data collected through fitness assessments and surveys.
  • Fulfill the legal requirements of the Texas Education Code, Title 2, Chapter 28, Section 28.004.
  • Increased integration of the Coordinated School Health program within the Campus Improvement Plans.
  • Create an increased focus on health, safety, and wellness among students, teachers and the community

 


 

Coordinated School Health Curriculum

Troy ISD has adopted CATCH: Coordinated Approach to Child Health.

 


 

Wellness and Sexual Health

Formerly known as Worth the Wait, Baylor Scott and White's Wellness and Sexual Health program empowers teens with the information necessary to develop healthy habits and relationships. To find out more, please visit the Baylor Scott and White Website.


Physical Fitness Programs

K-8 Physical Education Classes

Grades Kindergarten through fifth grade participatee in 30 minutes of physical education each day. Students also have recess during the school day.

Raymond Mays Middle School PE Students in grades six, seven, and eight participate in 50 minutes of physical education each day.

The Texas Education Agency has selected FITNESSGRAM as the assessment tool to be used by all school districts throughout the state of Texas.  At the end of the school year, parents may request a copy of their student's FITNESSGRAM assessment results.

Troy ISD SHAC members have met four times in the preceding year
Troy ISD has adopted policies to ensure that elementary school, middle school and high school students engage in at least the amount and level of physical activity required by Education Code 28.002(I) [see EHAB and EHAC)
Troy ISD has adopted, and is enforcing policies to ensure compliance with TEA's vending machine and food service guidelines for restricting students access to vending machines
Troy ISD has adopted and is enforcing policies/procedures that prescribe penalties for the use of e-cigarettes, as defined by Education Code 38.006, and tobacco products by students and others on school campuses or at school-sponsored or school-related activities [see DH and GKA]

Local School Wellness Policy

Troy ISD has a board-approved Local School Wellness Policy. Please see policy FFA Legal and FFA Local (below). SHAC members are charged with reviewing, updating, and evaluating the Local School Wellness Policy annually. Do you have feedback for the SHAC on the policy?
