The Staff Days (student holidays) are designed to help teachers by giving them time for lesson planning, analyzing student assessment data, and working together to target student learning needs. This is valuable time that teachers use to prepare for the next grading period.
Troy ISD has many students of different ages participating in the Bell County Youth Fair. The district supports students in these extra-curricular activities. For years, the district has closed for the first three days of the fair, leaving two days at the end of the fair week. The District Educational Improvement Committee looked at this long-standing practice and recommended that we move one of those two days to the beginning of the year and one to April. Now the days are much more likely to be effective for quality instruction when attendance should be normal. So, while it may appear that we are losing instructional time; in fact, the opposite is true as instructional time is better used with this change.
The District Educational Improvement Committee discussed whether to have a school holiday on Veterans Day. Because of special events (Veterans Parade) and specific lessons related to honoring our veterans, we believe students celebrate and understand the meaning of Veterans Day better if we have school that day.
