Andrea Westmoreland (formally Durbin) is no stranger to the district, having served as the principal of Troy Elementary School for the past 10 years.
This THS alumna’s new role as the district’s Student Engagement Facilitator (SEF) comes when
partnerships between schools and families have proven to improve students’ grades, attendance, and motivation
After 15 years as a principal, Westmoreland knew it was time for a change.  In fact, she had planned on retiring this past summer; however, when the SEF job was posted, she knew without a doubt that she was not done yet. “I thrive on being a positive influence and encouraging others. Life is hard and I want to offer others kindness, grace and encouragement.” Westmoreland stated. We sat down with Westmoreland to discuss hopes and aspirations for this school year and what she desires to accomplish.

What are your hopes for this new role?

I want to support and encourage students and staff who need someone in their corner, a friendly face, a listening ear, and someone who will not give up on them. I want to provide resources that allow students and staff to be successful.

What does a "day-to-day" look like for you?

No two days are the same! I visit both of the elementary schools once a week and both of the secondary schools twice a week. While on campus, I meet with students one-on-one or in a small group. I greet students in the hallways between passing periods or see them at lunch. I seek out students who may be upset, stressed, or just need a pep talk. I visit with administration, counselors, front office staff, and nurses to obtain suggestions on students who might benefit from my services. Since I also co-lead the district's new teacher mentor program, I check in with teachers, especially those who are new to Troy or new to the teaching profession.

How is it similar/ different from your principal role?

This new role still allows me to give out hugs and smiles while helping students, staff, and parents.

What are some goals you would like to achieve this year?
In the next 3-5 years?

My goal this year is to train everyone to use my new last name! LOL   I want to help students, parents, and teachers who are in need. I want to help students know their worth, improve their confidence level, lessen their anxiety, and successfully handle challenges in school and life.  In the coming years, I would like to help establish an environment where excellence and respect are the priorities.

Westmoreland’s new role is an additional supportive one for campuses throughout the district. She works with current local resources and personnel to help students navigate personal, emotional, and social issues. Her work will help students set goals to improve grades, attendance, and behavior. She will also meet and greet all students new to the district. She co-leads the district's new E3 Teacher Mentor Program (Elevated Educator Excellence). Additionally, she partners with parents and equips them with local resources and services.
